Summer in the City (Day One)

You must have returned, must be living, even now, within the city walls,

Your smile is sweet as a stand of sugarcane at the back of Summer’s land.

These are almanac days, I feel Autumn crushing down the hours.

I miss those flies, I guess. I miss the persistant stench;

Snakes miss Summer, Sunday evening misses Friday Afternoon,

Beneath the sheets of water tumbling cool around a layered shale slowly overturns.

On Sunday Island, in the sun, My girl tells me to beware;
