Thrush and willow,
boulder and billow,
scent of cedar drifting
across the Vedder River.
Herons wade in the slough canal,
pick at minnows and frogs.
Willows hang above the water,
whisking weeds with long arms.
A sudden mountain across the river
ascends in a coat of oak and elm.
Smoke curls from the old mill,
as it hums a high and gentle song.
